The Llullaillaco, with 6739mts, is the sixth highest mountain in America and the fourth highest volcano on earth.
It also posses the highest altitude sanctuary found on a mountain, nowdays you can appreciate the three Inca mummies that were on it´s summit at the MAAM museum in Salta city.
The first sportive ascent was made in the year 1952 by two Chileans, Bión González y Juan Harseim.
Nowdays and still active, Llullaillaco volcano with it´s 6739mts can be easily identifiable in the Puna Salteña region by it´s huge dome size.
ITINERAry
Day 1 - We head off from Salta towards the town of San Antonio de Los Cobres, where we stay for the next two nights

Day 2 - From San Antonio we go trekking to acclimatize better for Llullaillaco climbing up Cerro Negro. We come back to town after lunch.

Day 3 - We say good bye to San Antonio and head towards Tolar Grande. We go crossing two magnificent salt flats, Salar de Pocitos and Salar del Diablo. We arrive to Tolar Grande after lunch.

Day 4 - After breakfast we trek up the Cerro Macon, a 5500mts high up mountains that oversees the all of Salar de Arizaro, the second biggest saltplain in the world. We will also have a wonderful view of all the high peaks of the area such as Socompa, Sallin, Aracar and not so far away,our gold, the Llullaillaco rising up to 6739mts.

Dia 5 - From Tolar we go towards the base camp of Llullaillaco, we reach as high up as the 4wd vehicules can reach and establish campsite.
Aprox height: 4900mts.
Dia 6 - We begin our ascent towards our high camp, we will be walking on the archeological route. Most of the terrain we will be doing is loosen pebbles.

Aprox height: 5800mts.
Dia 7 - Early in the morning we wake-up ad leave all at our campsite, taking only the stuff we need for the summit attempt. After a hard work trek we reach the summit of the sencond highest active volcano in the world eight highest mountain in America. On our way to the summit we will be able to apreciate the inca sanctuaries that have done so remarcable this giant. After the summit, we get back to our campsite, put the tents down and get back to the 4wd to drive us to Tolar where we spend the night.

Dia 8 -After gaining some strengh back from a good night sleep we head back to Salta where our expeditions finishes.
