Quevar Volcano (Quewar, Quehuar) normal Route (7 days)

The Quewar is an emblematic volcano from the Puna region, is the third highest mountain in Salta region with 6155mts. It´s last eruption dates over 5 million years ago according studies done by the UNSa, having spread it´s flow on an area bigger that 1400 square metres.
The Quewar is also the highest peak of a complex of 6 volcanos known by the name of Nevados de Pastos Grandes, the Mamaturi of 4960mts, the Quironcolo of 5160mts, the Azufre of 5810mts, the Gordo of 5750mts, the Cerro Verde of 5430mts and the Aguas Calientes of 5380mts.

ITINERAry

Day 1 - We head off from Salta towards the town of San Antonio de Los Cobres, where we stay for the next two nights
Aprox height: 3600mts

Day 2 - From San Antonio we go trekking to acclimatize better for Llullaillaco climbing up Cerro Negro. We come back to town after lunch.
Aprox. 6hs
Aprox height: 5000mts

Day 3 - We say good bye to San Antonio and head towards Santa Rosa de los Pastos Grandes. We camp outside town where we will begin our trek the next day.
Aprox height: 4000mts

Day 4 - Our ascent begins through a gorge where water runs all year round from springs that born higher in the mountain, while we go gainning height we will be able to spot guanacos on the nearby ridges. We reach our campsite shortly after lunch, next to an old indian ruin.
Aprox: 6hs.
Aprox Height: 4700mts.

Day 5 - Slowly we leave the gorges behind and come up to higher ground, to the Puna plains where we will have the Quewar in front of our eyes once again we camp next to indian ruins. We will obtain water here by melting snow.
Aprox: 6hs.
Aprox Height: 5200mts.

Day 6 - Early in the morning we wake up to attack the Quewar summit, the slope angle increases considerably and also the loosen pebbles, characteristic of strato volcanos. After a fight of physical and mind power we reach the crater, here we will observe the favulous ruins and altitude sancturies that lay at over 6000mts high.
From here there are only a few metres to gain our summit. While finishing our climd an intense sulfur smell.
We come down to camp 1.
Aprox: 8hs ascent - 6hs descent.
Aprox Height: 6155mts.

Day 7 - We start our last trek towards the vehicule, after organicing everything we head for Salta where our expedition finishes.
Aprox: 2hs descent.
